Is Red Wine Good for You?

A glass or two of red wine? Why not?

Today’s article talks about red wine and all the amazing things it can do for your body if you only know how to drink them. Nutritionists and other health experts have been stating that red wine is actually good for your heart, mind and over-all health, but the question remains is this:

Is red wine still healthy to drink despite it being an alcohol?

Let us read further.

The Polyphenol in Red Wine

Red wine is rich in polyphenols, a plant compound also found in chocolates, peanuts and berries. Experts say that these compounds have anti-inflammatory properties and other health benefits like decreased oxidative stress and insulin resistance.

According to various research, these substances may aid in the stimulation of insulin to keep your blood sugar levels within the normal range. Also, there are studies linking polyphenols to cancer prevention. This is due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities that can protect the body cells from free radicals, or those that you get from pollution, stress, and other negativities in life.

I also would like to focus on one kind of polyphenol found in this alcoholic drink called resveratrol. What it is and what it can do to your body remains to be proven, but here are things you may find interesting:

The Resveratrol in Red Wine

Resveratrol is a compound that functions like an antioxidant. Grapes naturally have them and are found mainly in their skins and seeds. Health professionals around the world conducted different researches about resveratrol and its relation to cardiovascular health, and it was found out that that it can potentially contribute to blood pressure management which may help your heart to function at its best.

However, the American Heart Association reiterated to the public that there is no proven research yet to prove that drinking red wine can truthfully be beneficial to your heart.

In a Nutshell

With all the studies and researches conducted by health experts, one fact remains: Moderate drinking of red wine is more than beneficial than consuming all in a bottle. Just to give you a nutritional glimpse, a glass of red wine has:

Calories: 153

Carbohydrates: 4.7 grams

Protein: 0.126 grams

Total Fat: 0 grams

The recommended intake of wine is once a day for women, and one to two glasses a day for men. But before you fill yourself with a glass, be sure to limit each serving to 4 ounces. Red wine is the best choice among all alcoholic drinks as it is packed with antioxidants as compared to beers, spirits, and other types.

Now, all you need to do is take a few sips as you unwind from a hard day’s work. It is not bad to reward yourself every once in a while, so why not drink it up with a few bites of cheese or any food you love?

Cheers to good health!
